Imagine if you wanted to understand your weight, and instead of simply getting on a scale and reading the number, you had to go to one of many, all seemingly different online weight calculators. Once you found the one you wanted to use, you then had to recall how much food you ate over the last year, what types of foods they were, how many times you exercised, what types of exercises they were, and then tediously enter all of that data into the online calculator.
Clearly, if that was the process, none of us would have any clue how much we weigh. Unfortunately, understanding your personal carbon footprint is currently that difficult and because of that, very few, if anyone, knows what their carbon footprint is. We all agree that climate change is one of, if not the most important existential threat to the human kind, yet not one of us knows how much we are contributing to the problem.
Thus Carbon Insights ("carbIN"), a public benefit corporation, was founded in March 2020 with a team of three co-founders dedicated to solving this problem. What started as a concept between two EDF Climate Corps fellows has grown immensely with the addition of software engineering expertise. Our proprietary technology provides a back-end platform for financial institutions across the U.S. With our API as a service, we aim to empower financial services companies to provide their customers with a carbIN score that helps their customers understand their carbon footprint. With these insights to provide customized, personalized recommendations for consumers to act on, ultimately empowering them to take action and help the planet. Finally, our technology will also recommend trusted carbon offset providers for consumers to take their impact to the next level and fully offset their carbon footprint while also improving the lives of millions across the work.
We aim to change the story from “what the heck is a carbon footprint” to “I am helping reduce climate change by biking more and supporting a local tree planter”. We cannot solve the climate crisis independently and our mission is to empower everyone to understand, reduce, and offset their carbon footprint.
